Qlikview anyone?

Average: 1 (1 vote)

We've just had a demonstration of a product called Qlikview (qlikview.com). This is a new fangled business intelligence tool a la Cognos Powerplay (or Cognos8), that is purported to be simpler to use and much less expensive.

Does anyone out there in Bandev land use this product? I'd be interested in sharing notes and thoughts.

Thanks in advance

BI tools

I have no experience qlikview but I have tons of Cognos experience. I would highly reccomend the C8 BI suite as best in class BI. C8 is very powerfull. If you have any Cognos question I can try to answer

Cognos

We are going to implement Banner in the next 18 months using their WIN implementation methodology. Cognos is the reporting tool we are getting. I have worked with Cognos in the past. Can Cognos be used against the database, or is it only for the ODS? Basically is COGNO alone enough to meet all our reporting needs?

Back at the place where we used COGNOS, we were presented a different database and the report-writer did not have to know any table relationships, joins, etc. All they had to do was pick the columns they wanted.

Thanks.

I know Cognos...

Thanks for your comments of support for Cognos, folks.

I've known of (and used) Powerplay since version 0.9 oh so many moons ago. Not only did Powerplay define the BI space, it is still the leader in many ways.

The biggest problem with Cognos is the price. Way back when it was a PC-based tool, it cost almost $1000 per PC licence. And I have only seen the price go up since then, it seems.

My business clients found Qlikview, and were enchanted, both by the new experience (they have not seen any _real_ BI tools before), and the sales pitch ("you don't need any technical knowledge - it's all point-and-click").

In reality, I believe that the background work required to make Qlikview run is equal to the work required to make Cognos/Powerplay run. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, folks, especially with the monster database known as "Banner PROD" we all have come to know and love.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with Qlikview, and whether they would confirm or oppose my opinions about the tool.

Thanks
